Cooper and Cooper Jewelers of Fort Collins takes steps to make sure the diamonds it sells are not "conflict diamonds," gems which come from areas or countries where the money from their sale finances brutal wars. Cooper and Cooper provides its customers with the highest guarantee that its diamonds will come from areas free of conflict. The United Nations defines "conflict diamonds" as those that come from areas controlled by "forces or factions opposed to legitimate and internationally recognized governments, and are used to fund military action in opposition to those governments." Those areas include Angola and Sierra Leone in Africa. To prevent the sale of "conflict diamonds," the diamond industry adopted a system of warranties requiring diamond suppliers to guarantee to retailers that the diamonds come from non-conflict sources. In addition, the United Nations in 2003 adopted the "Kimberly Process Certification System" to make sure diamonds come from legitimate sources.
